The Story Behind The Photo...
Have you ever felt like life’s waves were relentless, only to realize you were built to withstand them?
I walked onto Cannon Beach as the sun began its slow descent, the wet sand squeaking softly beneath my sandals—a sound unique to this shoreline that always makes me smile. The air was thick with the scent of salt spray and the cry of seagulls circling Haystack Rock, that massive 235-foot monolith rising from the surf like a guardian of the coast.
This rock isn’t just stone; it’s a sanctuary. In the summer, it’s covered in colorful Tufted Puffins, but tonight, it stood stark and silent against a sky bruising purple and gold.
Photographing the coast is always a race against the tide. The water rushed in, cold and fast, swirling around my tripod legs, threatening to pull my gear into the Pacific. I had to plant my feet firmly, shivering in the cool wind, waiting for the moment when the water would smooth out into a perfect reflection.
As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow on the rock face, I thought of Psalm 93:4: “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty.”
I clicked the shutter.
In that image, Haystack Rock wasn’t just a landmark. It was a picture of unshakeable faith. The waves crashed and the tide rose, but the rock didn’t move. Standing there, soaked and awe-struck, I was reminded that no matter how loud the storms of life get, we have a Foundation that is mightier than them all.
